View Full Version : Quasi-Rumor: Lavonte David and Bills

Per ESPN Last Minute Free Agency Buzz one fit that is getting whispered about is the Bills and LB Lavonte David.
Presumably this would be the replacement for Edmunds. David is a classic Cover 2 LB with good range and great instincts. He is older and the contract would be key here.

Wouldn't hate it...depending on the contract...but I'd rather go younger.

Me too, if we are going in this direction I’d rather have Wagner, David’s production went down this past season. But I would rather have T. J. Edwards!

David is far more likely to be in our price range than Wagner or Edwards.

What kind of money do you think these three are going to get?

So would I. Which is why extending Edmunds (for the right money....like Joe B. projects (http://www.billszone.com/fanzone/showthread.php/262716-Restructures-and-other-cap-related-roster-moves?p=5009538&viewfull=1#post5009538), $16M APY with a $7.92M 2023 cap hit would be a no-brainer and the smart move.

Lavonte David would be an expensive band-aid and Edmunds was better than his last season, and still have upside....David is on the downside of his career.

I know you don’t agree, but as we are going to see in the next couple of weeks, Tremaine Edmunds is going to be a hot commodity and IS going to become one of the highest paid off-ball LB’s in the NFL, as he deserves.

Money talks and bullcrap walks. The money is going to do the talking.

I was hopeful for an Edmunds extension, but that feels like it's not going to happen at this point.

David would make a lot of sense as a short term vet replacement. Tampa has the worst cap situation and no QB. They're probably looking at a pretty bad year. David has been really durable, a consistent performer and would fit in well. For how much they put on that MLB position, I could see McD really wanting a player like David for that role.

There's no way I'm tying up 17mil on a LB whose success depends on everyone around him. He's never taken over a game. He's a great compliment to this defense but not 17mil worth on his own.

I agree he's going to be a hot commodity.
I also agree he's going to make some bank.

I don't agree he deserves it, however, and hope it's not us that backs up the Brinks Truck.

If I were a GM of a poor-middling team with a ton of cap space I'd throw money at him, but I'd move to him to edge in more of a Von Miller-type role.

David can still play, I wish we drafted him when he came out. Never fell more in love with a player, 2nd round too, ridiculous.

What kind of money do you think these three are going to get?

Sportrac has the market values at:
Edmunds - $11.9M/yr
Edwards - $11.9M/yr
David - $9.7M/yr

Wagner was on a 5 year $50M contract.

The article I posted referenced that Edmunds may try and push the market and ask for around $20M/yr, Edwards will likely go in the mid teens I'd bet. Wagner and David could be closer, but I think you can get David at sub $8M per year where you probably need to be close to $10M for Wagner.

I’d be happy with Wagner at $10 million for two years, but I’d go hard after Edwards before Edmunds signs and inflates the market.

Cowboys are reportedly the team all over Wagner, so you would have to outbid them.

That's a little surprising considering they've already got Clark in the wings to replace Vander Esch.

Not nearly as much as you thought, this might be the deal of FA.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Bears have agreed to terms on a contract with T.J. Edwards. It is reportedly a three-year deal worth $19.5 million with $12 million in guaranteed money.

Well the Bengals resigned Pratt for 3 years and $21 million. Two off the ball LB's going for $6.5-$7M per year could hurt Edmunds market. If he comes back cheaply enough, I'm not opposed to resigning him. He looked improved last year and with a new DC who knows if he could reach his full potential.

This scares me, maybe it drops all there prices and we can sign Wagner. I really can’t stand the thought of watch Edmunds for 4 more years.

As long as they add a starting caliber LB then I'm good. We can't just lose Edmunds and replace him with an average LB.

Sure we can AND have the same results. Edmunds was at best, an average MLB in a 4-3. If he gets moved to the edge in Chicago, he might live up to his huge contract v

That did not age well.

The report was that Edmunds asking price was $17M APY (too rich for the Bills)....Chicago heard that and said...”how about $18M”!!!

Ideally, you want to fill holes with young players who can be expected to be around for multiple years. Unfortunately, young players that are known to be good are normally expensive and, as we all know, Beane is on a tight budget this off season. Buffalo has enough holes to fill that some if not all of them will have to be value signings. Conner McGovern was an example of that. LaVonte David isn't exactly a value signing, but his age will give Buffalo a bit of a discount over a younger player of similar ability.
