McDermott to Call Defense in 2023

Bills coach Sean McDermott said Monday at the NFL's annual league meeting that he would be calling the defensive plays after Leslie Frazier decided to take a year off from coaching.

PHOENIX -- After defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier decided to take a year away from coaching in February, the Buffalo Bills are officially planning to have a familiar voice take over the playcalling for the 2023 season.

Bills coach Sean McDermott said Monday at the NFL's annual league meeting that he would be calling the defensive plays in Frazier's place. It marks the first time in McDermott's six-year tenure as a head coach that he will add playcalling to his full-time responsibilities.
Be interested to see if that means we’re not going to have a traditional DC to replace Frazier.

I think this proves that the coaching decision was more so a firing of frazier to save his face rather then him actually wanting a year off. A few years back frazier was calling players and we gave up like 70 points the first 2 weeks of the season, in the middle of allens first true start, mcdermott called plays in the second half which was obvious because we became insanely aggressive. From that point to now, weve seen this back and forth between fraziers safe passive defense then mcdermotts aggressive defense.

It's not surprising, and even though he won't say it publicly, it's pretty clear that by a.) not re-signing Frazer, and b.) announcing that he will be calling the plays, that he's not all that impressed with both the defensive playcalling and performance during Leslie's tenure.

On the radio, he said he'd have others on staff working with him. Bringing up the secondary a bit closer to the LOS would be a welcome change. So would teaching form tackling.

So he can share the success or the blame I suppose, depending on what camp your in..

Well.....we'll find out if it was Frazier or McD bringing the mellow. Imho it'll be worse if it was Frazier because McD was unable to assert himself against a mild...amiable man.

It was Frazier's defense. It was not McDermott's defense that Frazier was calling.

                    Now it's going to change.

Hope that he can really balance the H.C. and defensive coordinator duties.

They're tangled together. If it was entirely Frazier's D...why did McD presume to insert himself into occasionally running it without the exp to do so ?

This season will clarify a lot.

                            Nah.
I prefer playing the corners 10 yards off the line of scrimmage on 3rd and 6
                            that was a better strategy
                            I came.
                            I saw.
                            I conquered.

I'm not surprised in the least by that. It is solely due to Leslie Frazier's unsettled future, an indication McDermott is keeping the position available for his return. I think perhaps Al Holcomb will be upstairs to keep McDermott informed about what things look like from the bird's eye perspective. Not easy to see the field from field level.
I've made up my mind. Don't confuse me with the facts.

I'm the most reasonable poster here. If you don't agree, I'll be forced to have a hissy fit.
