Something of interest: The Score recently posted an interesting "what if?" article positing 7 blockbuster offseason trades as proposed by the site's NHL editors.

Buffalo wound up as one of the teams doing the trading.

Kayla Douglas proposed Buffalo trading for Winnipeg GK Connor Hellebuyck, with the Jets getting Ukko Pekka Lukkonen, Noah Ostlund and next year's 1st round pick. Two of the other three NHL staffers said that the Sabres would say no, a third said "good deal".

Pros: A top-notch goalie like Helly could push the Sabres over the hump and get them to the playoffs and Winnipeg would be willing to move him, seeing as he's in the last year of his contract. Cons: Giving up that much for Helly without an extension in place is risky. You almost never see a team go from missing the playoffs to winning the Cup. "This doesn't seem like the time for Buffalo to surrender key assets for a one-year rental."

As fans, we get upset about this team’s lack of performance, but that man devoted his life to the Sabres. Over 50 years with the organization and they couldn’t get him one Cup. Even worse, he didn’t even get to call a playoff game for the last decade of his life.

And in one last cruel twist of fate, the Sabres are finally showing some promise and he won’t be around to see what happens.

I’m sure they’ll dedicate the season to him and I hope they break the drought. Just sad that he won’t be here to witness it.

Strangely, the Sabres are playing a preseason game in DC at the same time the Bills are playing at the Commies. I put it on my iPad to watch between plays in the Bills game but gave up. Each team took two stupid penalties in the first 6 or 7 minutes. The Sabres took an offensive zone penalty while on the PP- wtf? It’s unwatchable. I’ll wait a month for the real games.

Per the Sabres: Pending waiver clearance, Clague and Stillman(as well as Brandon Biro)have been assigned to the Amerks. Likewise, Ryan Johnson and Lukas Rousek are heading to Rochester.

Gross start to the season. Stats look bad for Levi but maybe 1 of the 4 goals were his fault. Joker played puck and not man on the first one. S/T was pathetic and the amount of blocked shots was just disgusting.

The Sabres come and go as Thompson/Tuch/Skinner go, and they were as lethargic as they ever have been since they've played together. And those 2 recently paid defensemen weren't special either. In the opening intro before the game even started, Razor said that Granato told him that it was hard to know anything before the first 4-5 games. It was disappointing, but the expectations are huh for the Sabres and there was all the RJ stuff, so the emotions were out of control. It’s also a super young team. They will figure it out.

It's hard to watch. After all they went through last year, all the work, and falling short by one game you'd think they'd come out like a shot out of a gun. But the leaders look lethargic.

That's the issue I'm having. Statistically, the playoff teams are often settled by thanksgiving. Very few teams that are out at that time make up the points to get back into the playoff position. I know that sounds crazy, but it's a fact.

I've had more time to digest the game. I'll address OPivs concerns.

It always stinks to give up a late goal and give a team a point (or more) especially a team you're expecting to compete with for a playoff spot. Especially after they went out and got a two goal lead.

It does take the wind out of the sail of a win. There's Definitely a "but...." after that win.

That said, Tampa isn't a pushover. They aren't the juggernaut they used to be, but they're a team the Sabres should be near when the standings shake out. So a win, in any way, is a great outcome.

There's slight concern about Tage. He just doesn't look like himself yet. That said, he had 3 points in his first 7 games last year before he got 11 in 3. Nothing to panic over.

I get the feeling this is the sort of game that gets things rolling, perhaps slowly. Especially with Cozens finally scoring, and Levi playing his best game of the season so far. But the power play has got to get going.

The 3 on 3 OT will change, though, as it's become less of an end to end, rush on rush it was at the beginning, and more of a slow burn. Like what the Sabres did last night is now the text book attack style of 3 on 3. And that's not what the NHL wants.

I firmly believe the NHL will institute a shot clock in OT down the line.

Same old Sabres. PP is awful. Clifton racks up hits but is not a smart player. Top line is underperforming. Levi made a few mistakes tonight but the D still hangs him out to dry too often.

Cozens has been the bear player so far.

Ever since last season ended, I thought Tage would score 50 and the drought would be broken. I can’t see either of those things happening.

It's frustrating, especially seeing the sabres now have to play catch up. But if the sabres lost 3 of 4 in January, it would be a blip on the radar.

The youth clearly showed last night. The first goal was completely on Levi. The go-ahead goal was completely on Benson. At some point, the talent from the youth and experience from the vets has to come together, and it has to be soon before we're in an insurmountable hole.

That's my concern. Benson came out like gangbusters in the first two games. Now I think it's better served he goes back to juniors if this trend continues. I still think Levi should be in Roch.

The Sabres have a surplus of young forwards. Start shopping them for either a reliable backup or a d-man..

I think this is a playoff team. But also Adams did very little this off-season and just expected every players upward trends to continue. That's not happening.

You HAVE to love Erik Johnson calling out the team; after last night's game, he noted that when he was with Colorado, when the Avs started playing team defense, they started winning consistently. He wants to see that with the Sabres, too.

Former NHL goaltender Craig Anderson has an unusual new job with his former team, the Buffalo Sabres (https://www.espn.com/nhl/team/_/name/buf/buffalo-sabres).Anderson, who played his last game with the Sabres in April after 20 seasons in the NHL, has been hired as a "hockey liaison" by the organization. The part-time role doesn't make him a coach or an executive. According to the Sabres, Anderson will be "a trusted voice in the Sabres' locker room, providing insight, guidance, and support" to the players and coaching staff.

"Craig Anderson's voice, experience, and love for the game have been invaluable components to our team's growth over the past two seasons," Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams said in a statement. "Our players have benefited greatly from the habits and lessons he picked up during his accomplished 20-year career."

Anderson, 42, played his final two NHL seasons in Buffalo. He's tied for 31st among goaltenders in NHL history with 319 career wins and is the all-time leader in wins for the Ottawa Senators (https://www.espn.com/nhl/team/_/name/ott/ottawa-senators) with 202.

It was announced in August that Anderson would officially retire as a member of the Senators this season. TSN reported Thursday that he's expected to sign a one-day contract with Ottawa and formally retire next Tuesday in a game against Buffalo.

Gotta love this one. The Sabres committed some penalties in the 1st, but it was complete domination after that. In the 2nd, the Islanders had one PP and 1 good shift, but it was all Sabres other than that. PK has been dominant. Isles were the best faceoff team coming in, but Sabres dominated that too.

Varlamov was the only Islander that showed up. He’s the only reason this game wasn’t a complete slaughter. Comrie deserved the shutout. The one goal he gave up was a fluke in garbage time.

PP didn’t score but they were organized. They had shots and zone time. It’s a clear improvement.

Cozens remains the best player on this team. I like the new line alignment. Cozens/Tuch/Skinner is just insane talent. Having Tage and Greenway on the same line is so much size but still talented. I hope Tage doesn’t see it as a demotíon. The sample size is small but it looks like a better distribution of talent.

Mixed feelings on Tuch fighting. I love the fact that he stood up for the dirty hit on Skinner that wasn’t called, and he won the fight. And I don’t care about him taking the extra 2 for instigating when it was a dirty hit on a star and our PK is unreal. But, he’s one of our top offensive players and it took him off the ice for 5.

Islanders put their dirty 4th line out on the ice after the 2 late goals for the Sabres in the 2nd. Their line got called for a penalty but committed at least 3 that weren’t called. Good coaching and good discipline on the Sabres. No reason to fight when you’re up 2-0 at home.

Comrie is probably the best goalie on the roster right now. 6-1-1 in his last 8 starts. Levi young star. They are trying to let him get his feet wet. But it is Comrie & Levi. UPL is trade bait.

Biggest disappointment last night is Comrie not getting the shut out. With Levi & UPL, this acquisition gets marginalized. He's good and wants to show he is an NHL starting goaltender. The Sabres should announce him as their number 1 starter and ride him for as long as they can. The team plays hard in front of him too. So you know they like him.

Furthermore, Detroit is rolling. They'll come back to earth, but the point is they can't lose any more ground. A slow start becomes a bad season rather quickly. Beat a team you should beat, at home, and start moving north in the standings
