    Now he's a linebacker?

    NFL.com wire reports

PITTSBURGH (Sept. 3, 2003) -- Erik Flowers, a former first-round draft pick of the Buffalo Bills, was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Steelers to help fill the void caused by linebacker Joey Porter's absence.

    When did that happen?

Houston played him at DE last season and moved him to LB this offseason. They even changed his number to 57.

If I remember correctly, the Texans switched him to outside linebacker after he signed with them last year. The Steelers, like the Texans, play a 3-4 defense so one of the four linebackers often plays like a defensive lineman anyway and rushes the passer often. I think I remember an article in Shout! a couple of years back about how Flowers played at about 260 pounds. Remember that whole thing about how he was too light and not strong enough to hold up against offensive lineman? Well, I guess the Texans' and Steelers' thinking is that at outside linebacker he can still rush the passer and use his speed but will more often be blocked by a tight end, fullback, or halfback. And, oh yeah, Levon Kirkland is that big. Did you see him playing for the Eagles last year. He had to be at least 275 pounds. I remember thinking to myself "Why do they have a defensive tackle playing at middle linebacker? Oh, wait, that's Kirkland!!"

            Stood for # 57 on a 53 man roster.

He might be a better #4 LB than a DE. I had high hopes for that guy.

Sure hope Ryan and Chris don't turn out like Eric.
Still searching for that offensive rhythm.
