Bills PBP man John Murphy is taking more time before determining if he'll return to calling the games.

Recall that in the days before that fateful game with Cincinnati, Murphy suffered a stroke which necessitated Chris Brown filling in.

Murphy told the Buffalo News via text last week that he was going to take until late July before making a decision on whether to return, adding that A. he still has some recovery to do and B. he wasn't ready yet to be interviewed.

He's 68. Hope he can recover enough to enjoy some additional years with his family but retirement was probably close regardless.

He was at his best in his younger days when he did One On One Sports on 930 WBEN radio in the early evening. Great listen.

You cared enough to say that you don't.

I wish him well.

He doesn't have the vocal chops Van Miller had but the voice cracking when he gets really excited grew on me.

I don't wish any ill will on him or have anything against him. What I clumsily said was if someone else was calling the game it wouldn't matter to me one iota. Nothing personal.

Murph has a much better shot at returning this year than Frazier does in 2024.

Murph is a very good announcer and a worthy voice of the Bills….albeit not up to the legendary status of Van Miller….few in the radio sports announcing business are.

Van Miller was a special voice and man. I grew up listening to Van Miller as none of the Bills hame games were televised....I used my crapy little portable radio for every home game for years and years.

My dad once went on a group trip (I think it was to China…or Italy…or Russia, can’t remember which one…30 to 40 retired folks) and Van Miller (after he was retired) was in the group.

My dad said he was a great guy and travelling companion and was not at all a diva despite his fame.

There is one piece of video my dad captured on the travel bus where Van goes into “Bills announcer character” and recounts the day they had sightseeing, mentioning many of his fellow travelers like citing Bills players and the great plays they made during a game.

The whole group was howling in good fun.

My cousin purchased a ton of stuff from the van Miller estate sale. Tons of hats and jackets and some personal effects like sun glasses and his wife’s costume jewelry… in all the collection was kinda cool until I started looking at it then the creeps started rolling in.

Murph's problem is he has to try to live up to a guy who was basically a legend in Van Miller. It's a tough act to follow. And while Murph is good in his own right, he's not Van Miller level good. That being said hope he has a full recovery and can get back up there in the booth because listening to either Tasker or Brown during PBP would be especially brutal.

I didn't realize he had a stroke or I would have been more contrite.
