Hear me out
Why not have the backups go in the first, then in the final quarter put the starters in? It gives them a score to reach, allows them to play lesser competition generally to get a simplified opposition to run against to get the rust out, and allows the backups a chance to get actual meaningful reps vs a starting group
I understand you dont want your backups to play KC and get 14-0 immediately. But honestly, thats good experience and better than you get in the modern format. While the starters could end up playing backups in the 4th and get their communication down, and have limited risk vs the oppositions backups
Reverse it. Most teams will do the 1st-2nd-3rd team. But reverse it. Give your backups a meaningless game vs a starting offense, in the 4th, let your offense get their rhythm vs a 3rd string group
