Bills sign QB Shane Buechele, LB Christian Kirksey to practice squad - NBC Sports

The Bills have added quarterback Shane Buechele and linebacker Christian Kirksey to their practice squad.
Buechele spent the last two years with the Chiefs, who signed him as an undrafted rookie out of SMU in 2021. He has never appeared in a regular-season game but showed some promise in the preseason this year.
With Matt Barkley on injured reserve, the Bills have only Kyle Allen behind starting quarterback Josh Allen. Buechele will be the third man in the quarterback room.

I don't think they are looking for someone to actually suit up "in case ..." Maybe they are looking for someone to introduce new ways to look at plays, watch films, read defenses, from outside. More of a getting some Andy Reed magic if they can approach.

It seems like KC did like him. He was put on the active roster for a bit to prevent other teams from signing him. Seems like they let him see his options this season and wouldve came back if he didnt get a better opportunity


He probably sees K Allen as someone he could actually stand a chance against vs Gabbert (whos a solid backup)

Buechele looked awful in the preseason finale against Cleveland.

Errant passes, a pick six....let's hope he never has to leave the PS.

Backup QBs don't matter.

You're getting scrubs. You just need someone who can help your team escape losses for a week or two if your real QB gets hurt.

People on this board are acting like they expect Mahomes as a backup.

tell that to Philly a few years back, back up QB does have meaning, clearly ZBeane doesn't think so, this kid has 0 game exp... clearly a practice squad player that might have potential. I would rather have a up grade at the position just in case Allen goes down... this team isn't winning anything if he does... K Allen is not the answer on the field but he is friends with Josh though.

Nick Foles is a massive outlier and a huge credit to Doug Pederson as a coach.

We're done if Allen goes down.

I say that with full confidence.

I'd love to see us hang in there without him but he's about 70% of our offense. No one is stepping in and filling that void.

You don’t have to go back that far.

Last season San Fran....Lance starts the year, breaks his ankle in the 1st quarter of the second game of the season and is out for the year....then Garoppolo breaks his foot week #13 and is out for the year....then Purdy goes on a streak....until he wrecks his arm the 1st quarter of the NFC Championship ....then Johnson came in the game with 4:50 left in the 1st quarter....then HE gets hurt and is out of the game on the first drive of the second half....Purdy comes back and can’t throw the ball further than a few yards.

He really isn't.

There have been 10 Super Bowls won by teams playing their back-up QB, 1 out of every 5.7 played. Starting with Earl Morral, through Hostetler (ugh!) and Dilfer, and including none other than Tom Brady.
