    2023 Weekly Picks

Finally the 2023 season is about to begin. Time to put weekly picks on the line. So many posters crow about how brilliant they are, but avoid actually picking ALL of the teams who they think will win week by week and every week....and keep track of their success.

My 2022 record for picks was .642. A respectable record but one I am striving to beat in 2023. My best was week #13, when I went 13-1 (.929). Worst was week #10, 6-8 (.429) one of three weeks below .500. Also had six weeks above .700 (including the .929 already mentioned) and one week at .813.

With no further ado here are my week #1 picks....

    Week 1
Detroit Lions at Kansas City Chiefs
    Arizona Cardinals at Washington Commanders
    Carolina Panthers at Atlanta Falcons
    Cincinnati Bengals at Cleveland Browns
    Houston Texans at Baltimore Ravens
    Jacksonville Jaguars at Indianapolis Colts
San Francisco 49ers at Pittsburgh Steelers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Minnesota Vikings
Tennessee Titans at New Orleans Saints
Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears
Las Vegas Raiders at Denver Broncos
Los Angeles Rams at Seattle Seahawks
Miami Dolphins at Los Angeles Chargers
Philadelphia Eagles at New England Patriots
Dallas Cowboys at New York Giants
Buffalo Bills at New York Jets

The two most daring (and have myself questioning myself quite extensively) is Detroit over KC and Cleveland over Cincy.

The Detroit pick is the most difficult to make....KC, at home...opening day, on guard to NOT have a let down.

But, their two best players not named Patrick Mahomes will not be on the filed. Chris Jones with his ill-advised hold out, and Travis Kelce’s knee injury.

The FIRST game Kelce is missing because of injury since he became a starter in 2014.

KELCE is the go-to receiver for KC from well before Mahomes began his career. He IS Mahomes' crutch.

In his 9 years of starter (he missed all of his rookie year because of injury not getting one single offensive snap) he has ranked #1 or #2 in receptions, receiving yards AND targets.

In four of those seasons (2022, 2020, 2019 and 2016) he was #1 in ALL of those team stats. In FIVE seasons he was #1 in the two most important stats....catches and receiving yards.

Much was made last season when Tyreek Hill left the team, some opining that it would hurt the KC offense.. Horsehockey. TRAVIS KELCE is the ONE player (besides Mahomes) that makes that team great. TRAVIS KELCE is the most consistent and one of the best ball catchers in the NFL since 2014.

    Since 2014 Kelce is ranked #1 in catches (814...DeAndre Hopkins 801) and #4 in yards (10,344...Julio Jones 10,892, Hopkins 10,496 & Mike Evans 10,425).

Anyway....I’m going out on a limb and picking upstart Detroit to win that game. Same with Cleveland, with Watson having the most to prove over any other player in the NFL. At home, they take it to Cincy and beat them in a close game

Or, at least, that’s what I’m hoping for for both games.

I picked KC but I agree with nota that it's not as easy as a pick with Jones and Kelcie out, plus Detroit has improved. I'm not super confident.

I think nota is being overly optimistic in picking the Bengals and Chiefs to both lose in week 1. Bills aren't that lucky.

49ers at Steelers, Fish at Chargers and Cowboys at Giants were all tough picks so I just went with the home team, especially with the long road trips for the 9ers and Fish.

I'm hoping the Eagles destroy the Patriots. There's nothing more satisfying than watching those idiot fans file out of the stadium halfway through the third quarter to go sit in traffic for 3 hours.

I agree with all of your musings.

Yeah....I know I’m "overly optimistic in picking the Bengals and Chiefs to both lose in week 1”. But I genuinely make these picks for what I think will happen, not what I’m hoping for.

I’m picking Detroit over KC because of Kelce (even if he’s not out, he will be not 100%) and Chris Jones. NO DOUBT this is not even close to an easy pick (in reality, after doing this for a couple of years now...picking every game, every week and keeping track of the picks), hardly any picks are “easy”. Teams that have no business winning or losing, win and lose every single week.

My Cleveland pick over Cincy is nudged by Burrow not being 100%, and Watson with a HUGE chip on his shoulder. At home, the emotion is on the Brownies side.

Anyway....thanks for participating Opi. It’s fun and since I never bet money on any sports (or anything for that matter) it’s a cheap way to have a stake in every game.

I also make it a point to avoid criticizing anyone’s picks. That’s not what this is about. I’m just hoping to do better for the season than last year.

                    Re: 2023 Weekly Picks

Week one, as expected, was terrible for me. 7-9 (like last year week 1). First week is always the toughest.

I’m pleased that I picked two upsets, Det over KC and Cleveland over Cincy, but I really **** the bed on too many others. I still can’t belive that I was stupid enough to pick Pittsburgh over San Fran, and the Giants over Dallas.

Oh well. Live to pick another week.

Everyone should keep track of their own ongoing record, but a look at the six posters that participated, a shout our has to go to kscdogbillsfan1221 who blew everyone away with ELEVEN correct picks.

                    Congrats!!

Without further ado, here are my week 2 picks....

                    Week 2
                    Minnesota Vikings at Philadelphia Eagles
                    Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals
Chicago Bears at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Green Bay Packers at Atlanta Falcons
                    Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans
Kansas City Chiefs at Jacksonville Jaguars
Las Vegas Raiders at Buffalo Bills
Los Angeles Chargers at Tennessee Titans
                    Seattle Seahawks at Detroit Lions
New York Giants at Arizona Cardinals
San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Rams
New York Jets at Dallas Cowboys
                    Washington Commanders at Denver Broncos
Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots
New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers
                    Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers

I want Cincy to lose two straight, and they might just do so....but I have to go with the home team.

Riskiest pick is JAX over KC. KC is going to be as pissed off as the Bills to overcome their first week woes....KC lost at home though, and I’m going with the upset by JAX at home.

Also going with a hunch that New England is not going to let Tyreek Hill run roughshod all over the field like the terrible (and badly coached) LA Chargers did. NE played tough vs Philly even after going down 16 points.

I’m taking a risk trusting the Chargers vs Tennessee. If any team can make am almost washed up QB like Tannehill look like he still has it, it’s LA.

New York Jets at Dallas Cowboys- Cowboys (I will be at this game)
Washington Commanders at Denver Broncos- Broncos

Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers- Browns

It's hard to pick the Bills and Giants after how awful they looked last week, but I really think both teams are more talented than what they showed. Plus, the Bills will be juiced for the home opener.

We'll be in Dallas visiting my SIL, so I'm actually going to the NJ-B- Dallas game. A poster here named dreadnaught lives down there and has season tickets, and he graciously offered me one. So, hopefully Dallas sweeps NJ.

Also going with a hunch that New England is not going to let Tyreek Hill run roughshod all over the field like the terrible (and badly coached) LA Chargers did. NE played tough vs Philly even after going down 16 points.
He's gonna let Waddle do it instead?
