    The Evolution of Josh Allen

I believe that what we saw yesterday was a day to remember. Josh finally took that step to being an elite QB. No sacks, no turnovers, trickling the ball down the field, taking the checkdowns after looking long, handing the ball of instead of keeping it. I think he finally got IT. If he continues doing this, he could become a Peyton Manning in years to come, not only relying on his physical gifts but managing the game from a mental standpoint. If his mind catches up with his arm he will truly be unstoppable. I personally will always look back at this game as the turning point of his career. Mark my words. Yesterday was more than a win, it was the day Josh became elite.

    I hope you're right.

    But...

Let's see if he can do that when a game is tight and a defense is getting in his face before we start talking about a renaissance.

    He was great yesterday!

He did many things that could have blown up in his face yesterday but they didn't. The touchdown to gabe, the leap at the goal line before the failed 4th and goal, the touchdown to Shakir. If those were turnovers (and they could have been) people would be singing a different tune.

These are the things that make Josh great. He can do things that nobody else in the league can do and it sometimes will get him in trouble. We have to live with that as a side effect of his greatness. The thing he just really can't do is heave balls into double coverage for no reason like he did twice in the Jets game. His wow plays will be turnovers sometimes, but 80% of the time it's an astonishing play like the gabe/shakir touchdowns. He is who he is. He'll never be prefect but he is the greatest qb in the league when it's all working.

Thing is, Allen has had games like this before. Lots of them, in fact. It’s not uncommon for him to go 4 or 5 straight weeks playing games like yesterday. At some point, though, he always regresses for hero ball and loads of turnovers. Sometimes he snaps right out of it, sometimes it takes a couple of games for him to get back on track.

That’s just who he is as a player. All we can do as fans is hope the duds come in week 1 against a backup qb and not in January vs the Bengals or Chiefs.

As far as his play is concerned, that's definitely a legitimate comparison. Hopefully we never have to start comparing him to Favre off the field.

Bengals are in trouble 0-2 in North and Joe injured again.

it’s also his perspective that we cannot see. The throws to Gabe and Shakir might not have been as contested at his vantage point vs the cameras. He also has a fastball.

josh was on fire and confident.

Understood. But they started 0-2 last year and still managed to beat us and make it to the AFCCG. If Burrow’s injury lingers, it could be an issue for them, but if he recovers quickly, they’re still a threat.

And if it’s not them, it’ll be the Dolphins or the Ravens or someone else.

Yeah, I hope you're right too, I have the same expectations. But, he needs to show it over the long haul and against better defenses.

We've seen this before from him, then he seems to get lazy or regress. It's hard to tell whether it's him or the offensive coordinator. Were those spear chucking passes into double coverage vs the Jets that ended as INTs first reads for him or was that all Allen? Why didn't he go to check-down on those plays? Did it take messing up vs the Jets to get him mad enough to produce what we saw vs the Raiders? If so, this could be a very up and down season for the Bills.

I stand by what I said before. Every time the Bills get Gabe Davis the ball 4 to 5 times or more, the Bills win. When it's mostly just Allen to Diggs, they struggle. They need to spread the ball around to be effective.

Josh played good yesterday but he needs to do a much better job with protection before the snap. Too many times there’s a defender unaccounted for in the backfield.

It goes hand in hand with his OC. Both need to stay on the same page, and Dorsey needs to take charge with the play calling. He called a very good game yesterday, and didn't allow Josh to stand there for a long time very often. The ball was out quick, and precise, and they took exactly what Vegas gave. Running the ball effectively also helps a great deal.

And you need those deep patterns incorporated into the play design to draw coverage, open up the shorter routes and help the run game. Ultimately it's up to Josh when he gets rid of the ball and to who.
