Why Did Bucs Punter, Jake Camarda Escape Ejection????

Bucs punter Jake Camarda escapes penalty or ejection for swinging his helmet

Last night’s game between the Buccaneers and the Bills included a strange moment after Tampa Bay kicker Chase McLaughlin connected on a 57-yard field goal.

A skirmish emerged. And it culminated in Bucs punter Jake Camarda removing his helmet and swinging it. The helmet makes contact with the helmet of Bills pass rusher Greg Rousseau and the arm of Bills linebacker Terrell Bernard (who seemed to be shoving Camarda’s face mask just before Camarda weaponized his entire helmet).

Flags were thrown. Ultimately, no penalty was called.

You are not supposed to EVER even take off your helmet on the field.

Swinging your helmet at another player is an extremely SERIOUS and dangerous illegal (of NFL rules) act. Camarda should have been EJECTED. Period.

He was allowed to punt FOUR MORE times after that incident. Not having a punter would have changed the game significantly.

The NFL rules concerning taking your helmet off is UNEQUIVOCAL....

The rule includes this language: “Removal of his helmet by a player in the field of play or the end zone during a celebration or demonstration, or during a confrontation with a game official or any other player.”

It is not a judgment call. It’s automatic, with no discretion or exceptions.
The NFL rule book, Rule 12, Section 2, Article 17....

ARTICLE 17. USE OF HELMET AS A WEAPON. A player may not use a helmet that is no longer worn by anyone as a weapon to strike, swing at, or throw at an opponent.

Penalty: For illegal use of a helmet as a weapon: Loss of 15 yards and automatic disqualification. If the foul is by the defense, it is also an automatic first down.

If he does not get suspended SEVERAL games, the NFL has a lot of explaining to do.

As it is, the referees handed the Bucs a HUGE advantage by NOT enforcing what is suppsed to be a sacrosanct rule.

I was wondering the same thing. I don't think he took it off intentionally- it looked like one of the Bills players knocked it off or at least pushed it most of the way off and he just finished the job. IMO the Bills player should have been flagged for unnecessary roughness and Carmada should have been flagged and ejected. I couldn't believe there were no penalties from that scrum.

In fact they threw a flag and picked it up.

      Garrett got 6 games.

He took it off or Bernard helped him remove it? Either way I was good with it.

It definitely looked like he swung it at Rousseau, and Rous was like WTF dude you can't do that.

The fact that they picked up the flag just shows how incompetent NFL officiating is.

It's a stupid rule, but it's a rule. Also, I don't really care that there wasn't a flag for taking the helmet off but he still should have been flagged and ejected for the swing.

I did think it looked like Bernard pushed the helmet up at :53, and that Lawson did take his own off. Refs called it a wash and let them play on.

On replay it didn’t really look like he swung it as much as he took it off with fast since it was already being pushed off.

I thought the flag being picked up made sense after the replay.

Most likely a part of the Biden crime family or from that party.

They can do anything they want and blame the other guy for doing it.

Lawson did not use the helmet as a weapon. BIG difference.

Plus, Camarda took his OWN helmet off (but, it is irrelevant to the rules who took the helmet off) and HIT two players with it. He clocked Rousseau directly on his (helmeted) head.

The rules are quite clear. The disqualification is AUTOMATIC. There is NO judgement call. When NY looked at the video replay, they should have told the on field refs to EJECT him immediately.

                          Period.

Read the rule again....it's unequivocal...Camarda should have been immediately disqualified.

ARTICLE 17. USE OF HELMET AS A WEAPON. A player may not use a helmet that is no longer worn by anyone as a weapon to strike, swing at, or throw at an opponent.

Jesus. A player does not even have to make contact with anything to get ejected. Simply swinging the helmet at an opponent is grounds for ejection.

Camarda not only swung the helmet he did, in fact, "strike" an opponent with it.
