    NFL officiating crew 'downgraded'

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday that referee Brad Allen's crew will be downgraded for the postseason.

"A large part of Brad Allen’s crew is not gonna be officiating in the postseason," Schefter reported. "They’re gonna get downgraded."

The Lions appeared to have a go-ahead 2-point conversion in the game's final minute Saturday when quarterback Jared Goff hit tackler Taylor Decker in the end zone for what would have been a 21-20 lead.

Former President Donald Trump early Thursday touted the results of a new NPR/PBSNewsHour/Marist poll showing him ahead of President Joe Biden by 8 percentage points among independents.

They're working this weekend... I can't remember which game, but it's not ours.

With the amount of money the NFL makes, I can't fathom why they don't upgrade their game by upgrading the ref situation. Full time, highly paid and trained professionals. They would make even more money and fans by fixing the ref situation. No one loses in this scenario, except well....

The only explanation that makes sense is that the NFL prefers it the current way, which seems to be inferior. The only question is the reasoning behind that preference.

                      Re: NFL officiating crew 'downgraded'

The NFL has made this worse by trying to explain it away and insisting their refs made the right call by sending a video with narration and annotation, to every NFL team

The Athletic was all over it and described the effort in their daily The Pulse, email to subscribers. The commentary spells out the stepping on the rake moment...

We are still talking about the Lions-Cowboys refs

All of us can think of a time when we tried to remedy a situation with another action but actually made things worse. It might’ve been some theoretically helpful deed or even something as simple as trying to explain yourself further. Those often flop.

The NFL did a combination of both yesterday, in the eyes of the Pulse Court. Quickly:

                      • The league sent a training video to all 32 teams, thinking it would clearly show how referees at the end of the controversial Cowboys-Lions game last Saturday actually made the right call on the fateful two-point conversion. There was narration, annotation, everything.

                      • But we’re now more confused. The video juxtaposed two plays: One from earlier in the contest, when Detroit center Dan Skipper ran onto the field while gesturing to the ref that he would be eligible. Easy call. The next was the doomed two-point conversion at the end of the game, in which Skipper made a similar gesture while running on the field, thus alerting the referee he was eligible. So when fellow Detroit lineman Taylor Decker made the game-winning catch, it was wrong. Right?

                      • Maybe not. As Kalyn Kahler and Colton Pouncy handily explained here, referees ask that lineman reporting eligible make the physical gesture and report verbally to officials. On the final play, you can see Skipper gesturing, but he maintained after the game that he said nothing to the refs. Meanwhile, you can also see Decker — in the NFL’s video, no lessmaking the gesture while facing an official. The official marked Skipper as eligible, not Decker, though Decker says he spoke to the ref.

Pulse verdict: We’re siding with the players here. It was frankly weird to see the league go out of its way to explain this scenario. A simple acknowledgment of miscommunication would’ve made this story go away quickly. Now we have more fodder for a rolling discussion of bad officiating moments. Sigh.

Here is The Athletic's Colton Pouncy's tweet.....

Referencing some of the material from Notacon....

Oversight from league headquarters in New York and team owner sentiment are the top impediments, sources tell Yahoo Sports. And there's no reason to believe it will change anytime soon.

Seems the owners/league don't want to spend money to improve their product.

I'm no defender of officials, they've been terrible and it's made me as upset as anyone....but there's also stuff out there (no link) that the Lions were trying a shell game with the defense by sending multiple linemen over.

Trying to confuse the opponent. I'll give that a

Responsibility is always with the ref and he failed and then covered it up with lame ass excuses when it was obvious to millions including Cowboy's fans ..... that the Lions successfully did their job and that the ref did not!

They were robbed of the 2 seed.
