Defense shows signs, but must do more

Lost in the euphoria of last Sunday's stirring 45-39 overtime victory at Minnesota was the fact the Bills' defense has made some progress, but not enough to take pressure off the offense.
The Bills needed every point quarterback Drew Bledsoe and the offense could muster because the defense rarely stopped the Vikings, who gained 281 yards passing and another 213 on the ground.
Despite those numbers, there were some signs that the defense is coming around. The Bills recorded five sacks as the d-line provided a pass rush without the benefit of much blitzing from linebackers and defensive backs. The defense also forced three fumbles, recovering one for a touchdown and setting up field goals with the others.
However, more improvement is needed if the Bills are to contend in the tough AFC East Division. . . .
