Hollis kicks Bills special teams up a notch (http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/articles/20020919/428283.html)

Mike Hollis' confidence got a boost long before he started hitting clutch 50-yard field goals for his new team, the Buffalo Bills.

It was during a meeting before the season started when Bills special teams coach Danny Smith reassured Hollis.

"I really admire the fact that Danny Smith had said, 'We're playing the varsity squad this year because we've got a varsity kicker now. We're going to try some long attempts,' " Hollis said. "Obviously, that shows a lot of trust in me from Danny."

Hollis' arrival, after he signed as a free agent last spring from Jacksonville, has changed Buffalo's special teams.

Last season, inexperienced kickers Jake Arians and Shayne Graham proved unreliable. The Bills never attempted a field goal beyond 50 yards, an indication of how little faith they had in Arians, who missed 9-of-21 tries, or Graham, who missed 2-of-8 down the stretch.

This year is different.

I agree. I want to see him kick in bad weather before I decide.

So you are waiting for the 3-5 games a year that weather plays a part in the kicking game instead of the other 11-14 games a season where the weather is not a factor? How's Bledsoe going to do in the snow?

What about a plague of locusts?

What do YOU know? :shakeno:

Tell you what... If you can guarantee perfect weather for every game, then by all means sign him.

Coming from Jacksonville, he had to kick in Pittsburg, Cincy and Cleveland. I'd say he has experience in cold, windy, freezing rain, horrible turf, hostile crowd, snowy weather conditions.

I couldn't imagine our D without Fletcher especially with Spoon out...20 tackles last week against the Vikings and a forced fumble

Ok, he's 0 for 1 at < 21F. That's not enough to go on.
10 of 13 at 21-40F, with 1 miss in the 30-39 range and 2 misses at over 40 yards.

Rainy he's 19 of 20
Windy he's 47 of 53 (88.7% success rate)

Obviously, he's kicked in the wind a lot, so that shouldn't be a concern. I am curious to see how he'll do when it's pretty cold out there though.

He'll be practicing, he's too good of a kicker to rest on his laurels. Besides after last year, being his worst, and stuck on a team he didn't want to be on, he's got something to prove, and with the way this team could develope over the next few years, there won't be a better team to be a part of. Take a look who is out there and who is going to need a kicker next year. I think if the Bills don't lock him up for the next 2-3 years, someone else will and benefit, while Buffalo tries to get by with another Arians. Good kickers are hard to find.

:pimp:

I think it is too early to tell what will be the second best acquisition (draft picks excluded) TD made. The first is clearly Drew.

Here are the candidates in my mind ranked after two games:

(1) Mike Hollis -- # 1 after last week's outstanding performance

(2) London Fletcher -- not a great week # 2, but stopped Martin

(3) Charlie Rogers -- great week # 2

(4) Trey Teague -- solid thus far in a new position

(5) Dave Moore -- blocking excellent & expect him to be thrown to

(6) Eddie Robinson -- slow start, but expect more from him

(7) Chidi Ahanotu -- adds veteran leadership

(8) Billy Jenkins -- lost starting job, but has a role in nickle

Oh I know there are more, but those are my realistic candidates -- other than Drew -- for second best acquisition by TD. As the year progresses, one will emerge.
