    Good read

Is the Buffalo Bills' vastly improved defense capable of picking up the slack if their offense has the sort of problems it did in two games against the New England Patriots last season?

Yes. The offseason additions of linebackers Takeo Spikes and Jeff Posey and mammoth tackle Sam Adams would have been enough to accomplish this. But the acquisition earlier this week of former Patriots safety Lawyer Milloy makes it a virtual certainty. Milloy, who is extremely physical, will play a major role in the matchup that should make the difference in the game -- the Bills' secondary against the smallish Patriot receivers. Cornerbacks Nate Clements and Antoine Winfield will use their considerable strength and aggressiveness to consistently knock receivers Troy Brown and David Patten off their short and intermediate routes and disrupt the vital timing with quarterback Tom Brady. That should force Brady to look for deeper passes, but the longer he must sit in the pocket, the better the chances of the Bills getting to him with a variety of blitzes. New England's best solution for countering Buffalo's physical coverage is by running the football, but Antowain Smith and Kevin Faulk don't form an effective enough combination to have success against the Bills' upgraded front seven.

The Patriots will again try to frustrate and confuse Drew Bledsoe and the Bills offensive line by having some of their linebackers shift back and forth between their regular spots and defensive end, and bring pressure from a variety of areas. However, Bledsoe has developed good enough chemistry with his receivers to do a better job of making the correct hot reads against the blitz. The "inside information" that Milloy has shared with Bledsoe, a close friend when they were teammates in New England, should help plenty on that count.
