A good person however he certainly is not the 1DT we need next to Oliver.

What impresses me the most is that he was a captain for three years. He must be one of those guys that folks gravitate to because he knows how to motivate and lead.

MCD loves players who had a leader role or played captain on. their team.

Very true.

And once you get to this level, you should be self-motivated, and exhibit at least some leadership tendencies.

For lack of leadership, See: Sabres, Buffalo.

Similar to Marv Levy in that respect.

Beane put in the work, trading down in the 1st, twice - for this?

Gotta make sure we replenish the d-line rotation so they're fresh during a huge game where they'll all make a combined zero big plays!

He could find guys like that in later rounds - where we have a ton of picks. Find guys with upside in the 3rd round. This was a major reach.

Carter is purely a run stopper with limited pass rush upside.

Mckinley Jackson went 2 picks later and has far more upside.

There’s still 4-5 guys I like better in the board. Another underwhelming pick.

This is why trading down is stupid. More pics, less talent. We'll be lucky to have one difference maker out of the 11 pick draft everyone was drooling over.

He's going to be part of a rotation, and they need bodies for that.

It's not like they've been getting difference-makers for the Dline in previous drafts (or even free agency regardless of how much $$ money they throw at them) anyway.

This kid won't start, but he'll probably play.

Yes. Get bodies later in the draft though- where we have a ton of picks.

With a 3rd round pick, draft a player with upside who could be a difference maker.

It was unfortunately a throw away pick after trading down with KC for it.

He was not drafted to be "the 1DT we need next to Oliver.".

He was drafted to be Oliver's backup, which is critical to realize the Bills rotational scheme for D-Line.

See, using a 3rd round pick to draft a backup, on a team with so many needs, is stupid!

This guy is going to be a pleasant surprise for some of you.

An NFL coaching staff and off-season program is going to make him what he can be.

No, it's really not. "Backups" play in this defense.

An offseason program. Ha.

He has a softer, less powerful body. That ain't changing.

You can find the equivalent in later rounds

No, it's not.

The word "backup" may be throwing you off. If he succeeds he will play at least 40% of the defensive snaps.

In 2023 Oliver played the most snap counts of his career....68.1%....WAY more than any other year.

In Oliver's five years as DT, he has had the most snaps of any DT in four of those years....never topping 57.79% until 2023.

The only year he was #2 in DT snap counts was 2022, Ed had 50.14% (the fewest of his career and so few because he missed four games due to injury) and DaQuan Jones had the most, 61.18%.

Ed Olivers' snap count for each year...

2019 - 53.67
2020 - 53.97
2021 - 57.79%
2022 - 50.14%
2023 - 68.10%

The Bills DO NOT want Oliver playing 68% of the snaps. The sweet spot is LESS than 60%.

So, it is better to categorize Carter as the "rotational DT behind Oliver". "Backup" is a misleading term.

"rotational DT behind Oliver" is a CRITICAL position, so using a 3rd round pick on that position is VERY SMART!!!

Just because his ceiling is around 40% of the snaps doesn't mean he's any good. He lacks power and burst. He could very well get blown off the line. You can find these guys later in the draft. This was a reach. Give me a guy here with starter potential.

He’s essentially gonna eat up Tim Settle’s snaps. Not sure how our DL play won’t automatically get better because of that substitution.

He may not become a star but he should settle in nicely.

I'm just suggesting we have our "starters" locked in .... he has a rotational roll.

Every team has a similar situation "starters" and depth.
