Goodell floated the possibility before the start of the 2024 draft. His idea would possibly push the Super Bowl to Presidents’ Day weekend.

"I think we're good at 17 now," Goodell said. "But, listen, we're looking at how we continue. I'm not a fan of the preseason.… The reality is, I'd rather replace a preseason game with a regular-season game any day. That's just picking quality.

New England Patriots (https://www.foxnews.com/category/sports/nfl/new-england-patriots) center David Andrews, who won two Super Bowls with the team, pushed back on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's assertion that the league doesn’t need the preseason.

"With all due respect, you don’t need it cause you’re not suiting up and there’s a lot of veterans who don’t," Andrews wrote on his Instagram Stories. "But there’s a lot of young players and undrafted guys who need it to develop and prove they deserve a chance to play. But hell, maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about."

Thoughts on the 18 game schedule or the elimination of all pre-season games?

I guess I wouldn't be opposed to 2 and 18, but I agree with Burrows it should come with a second bye week as part of the package.

And they should re-rank the playoff so that the best 14 teams get in regardless of Conference.

Would love to see the Bills beat Miami in the Super Bowl.

As well as an increased active roster allowance.

18-game season could alter entire NFL schedule - NBC Sports (https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/18-game-season-could-alter-entire-nfl-schedule)

Whatever Roger wants, Rogers gets. And Roger wants 18 games.

If/when (when) he gets it, the NFL’s calendar could change.

Goodell has dangled the possibility of moving the Super Bowl to President’s Day Weekend, which will help build support for an 18th game. But what if the NFL Players Association insists on a second bye week? That would require the season to start on Labor Day Weekend, in order for it to end the day before President’s Day.

The league has avoided Labor Day for years, because the ratings are lower on the last unofficial weekend of summer. Given the way the NFL has grown in recent years, the NFL would probably gobble up Labor Day Weekend in the same way it has devoured Thanksgiving and Christmas.

As noted by Mark Maske of the Washington Post, an 18th game also could result in the offseason tentpole events sliding from their current spots, with the Scouting Combine moving to March, free agency shifting to April, and the draft slip-sliding to May.

The NFL already owns the sports calendar. They would steal even more attention away from other leagues by expanding the offseason like an accordion.

However it plays out, 18 games is inevitable. As is, I believe, 19. Eventually, 20.

With the revenue that comes from games that count, the NFL will want more of them. That’s why expansion from 32 teams is inevitable, too.

Thing is… the SB is always in a warm weather city or indoor venue. If you do that, you’re talking outdoor playoff games i. February. I know… it’s not that much worse than January, but the later you push the playoffs, the more likely you are to have games with awful weather.

Fans lost toes at the game in KC….

I’m not opposed to swapping another preseason game for a real game. I just don’t like the idea of a mid-February Super Bowl.

I wonder if they'd ever consider starting the season 2 or 3 weeks sooner.

Still against any increase in games.

The injuries are out of control already.

NFL should re-take Labor Day weekend - NBC Sports (https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/nfl-should-re-take-labor-day-weekend)

“People want to stretch those last, lazy days of summer,” the league explained in its announcement from August 30, 2000. “That’s why the NFL has decided that this Sunday and Monday (September 3-4) will be the last time (https://www.nfl.info/nflmedia/news/2000news/NFL-42.htm) that it opens its season on Labor Day weekend. Beginning with Labor Day, 2001, NFL fans will be able to enjoy the unofficial ‘end of summer’ at the beach, in the country or at the barbecue, and then kick off fall with the opening of the NFL season on the weekend after Labor Day.”

On the surface, that fits the whole “football is family” vibe. As we know, however, football is business and they say “football is family” because saying “football is family” is good for business. The NFL abandoned Labor Day weekend because it was bad for business to try to maximize TV audiences when people are doing Labor Day weekend things.

With the NFL considering an expansion of the season to 18 games, possibly with the addition of a second bye week, the NFL might need to reverse course on not working on Labor Day weekend. And that might be a good thing for the league.

Once they go to a 7 on 7 format with flags the injuries will drop

There have been 18 games in the CFL since 1986. So far, no deaths. Players will adjust and be fine.

Haha Woody’s the world’s oldest Bills cheerleader. Imagine a septuagenarian waving pom-poms. That’s Woody.

He knows that there’s no such thing as a “pussy” pro league. There’s a huge difference in talent of course but hitting and getting hit by large and fast humans doesn’t change.

Us old timers can remember the day when there were SIX preseason games. (That you had to still pay full price for that didn't count!)

:fogey:

I think it would probably be a good move.

What I would do is start the preseason with a controlled scrimmage, as opposed to a first game. (televise it locally)

Let the last place finishers play in the HOF game, and the international crap. (They need the extra work anyways)

Then play one full preseason game.

Then play 18 rsg's.

I used to like opening at home on Labor Day weekend.

Go to a game....cook out...tailgate...party...stay until dark.

Then you have all of Monday to sleep in and unload the car.

I can't go that far...I'm too much of a traditionalist to give up the conference set-up.

I agree. After the 13 year AFC Super Bowl drought from 85-97 it became coded into my DNA to hate the NFC (Chief exception of course) and want to defeat them.
