Painful hit has Culpepper all sore

Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper prides himself on his high threshold for pain.

Two years ago, Culpepper tried to play through a posterior cruciate ligament strain in his left knee, but coaches decided to bench him after his start against the Pittsburgh Steelers clearly showed he was not himself.

So Sunday, when Culpepper said he couldn't return to the game after taking an unnecessary hit to his lower back on a 2-yard touchdown run, his teammates and coaches were worried.

Three small bones on the left side of Daunte Culpepper's spine are broken. Another is cracked.

The injury has left Minnesota's star quarterback listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against San Francisco, giving the Vikings plenty of uncertainty to go along with their 3-0 start.

Culpepper and Moss won't practice until Friday

Culpepper suffered multiple fractures in his back during Sunday's 23-13 win over the Detroit Lions, while Moss is also bothered by a back injury.

The Vikings list Culpepper as doubtful for this Sunday's game against San Francisco, while Moss is questionable.
