    Smith tackles bonus before sack record

    Although he remains three sacks shy of owning the record, Washington Redskins defensive end Bruce Smith has already collected the $750,000 bonus due him if he overtakes Reggie White as the all-time scourge of NFL quarterbacks, thanks to a reworked contract the 19-year veteran signed earlier this week.

    ESPN.com has confirmed through team and league sources that, under the new deal that was reported to the league on Thursday, the team took the bonus and transformed it into base salary for the 2003 season. The Redskins also wrote into the reconfigured contract a bonus of $1 million, contingent on the team making the playoffs.
