Darcy Regier was at an offseason outing for Buffalo Sabres suite-holders this summer when he looked around at the players signing autographs. He saw center Daniel Briere, then he saw winger J.P. Dumont.
"I'm a little concerned," Regier said to Dumont.

"What do you mean?" Dumont replied.

"Well," the Sabres' general manager said, "how many French guys do we have?"

The Montreal native didn't hesitate.

"Not enough," Dumont said.

For the record, the Sabres have five players of French Canadian descent in training camp - goaltender Martin Biron, defenseman Joel Bouchard and forwards Briere, Dumont and Steve Begin. While that may not be enough for Dumont's taste, it is more than the team has had in recent years.

After witnessing the dividends Briere paid when he arrived at the trade deadline and helped ignite a goal-scoring trend, the Sabres decided a French twist would help the team. They added Begin and Bouchard as free agents during the offseason.
