    Jets' Pennington 'giddy' after throwing

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- New York Jets quarterback Chad Pennington threw Monday for the first time since being injured in a preseason game.

Pennington threw about 50 times in a 20-minute period.

"It felt good," Pennington said afterward. "I'm very giddy and very excited just to be out with the team again, putting on a green and white jersey. I haven't had a chance to do that since Aug. 23."

The Jets are 0-4 without Pennington, who has been replaced by 39-year-old Vinny Testaverde.

While this is great news for the Jets, IMO... it's bad news for us. Granted he won't be ready to play, but the Jets are NEED a win, and this could fire them up even more.

I was thinking the same thing. Coming off a bye with news like this can only help them.

Bingo on that. Last year the jets started 0-4 and won the division. Maybe not this year but Coach Edwards is a top-notch guy.

          'He's getting closer'

Jets' Pennington throws 12 passes during practice
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- Jets quarterback Chad Pennington threw during seven-on-seven drills at practice Thursday.

Pennington, who throws right-handed, dislocated and broke his left wrist in the preseason and is not expected back for several weeks. But this was the first time he threw during practice since the injury, tossing 12 passes and completing eight of them.

He also stayed about 30 minutes afterward, working on footwork, throwing and conditioning, just as he did Wednesday. Coach Herman Edwards said Pennington might start practicing during team drills next week.

            Pennington Thowing out good vibes

Chad Pennington took another step - albeit a small one - toward recovery and return to the Jets' lineup when he simulated Bills' quarterback Drew Bledsoe - throwing 12 passes and taking shotgun snaps on the scout team yesterday.

Pennington completed 8-of-12 passes and threw a TD, although FS Jon McGraw came up with two INTs.

"It was good to see him in the huddle and throwing the football," Herman Edwards said.

Edwards is hoping to have the injured QB take part in some full 11-on-11 team drills from the regular snap position, he said, noting that Pennington will be wearing a red jersey, meaning "do not touch."

There is still no timetable for Pennington's return, although there is hope within the organization that he'll be back for the Oct. 26 game in Philadelphia. The more realistic date is Nov. 2 against the Giants.

Jets' Pennington '50-50' for Oct. 26 return

New York Jets coach Herman Edwards said there is a "50-50" chance quarterback Chad Pennington will start against the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 26.

Pennington, out since the preseason with a broken and dislocated left wrist, will begin doing team drills this week at practice wearing a red, noncontact jersey. Edwards said there is no chance Pennington will start Sunday against Houston, but he could be New York's No. 3 emergency quarterback.

Edwards said he will make that decision later this week, and also is trying to decide whether to make Pennington the backup before he starts a game. As of Monday, Pennington has not yet been cleared to play.

                Pennington ready to play

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Chad Pennington will make his return to the New York Jets on Sunday, although not as the starter.

Coach Herman Edwards said Monday that Vinny Testaverde will start at quarterback, and Pennington will enter the game off the bench. Pennington, slated to be the starter this season, has missed the whole year after breaking his left wrist Aug. 23 in a preseason game against the New York Giants.

Edwards said he wants to get Testaverde in the flow of the game, but would not say when he plans to put Pennington in. He made the decision to start Testaverde because he does not know whether Pennington is in condition to play four quarters.

VINNY WILL START, CHAD WILL GET TIME

Herman Edwards delivered a surprise announcement regarding the Jets' quarterback situation yesterday, revealing that Vinny Testaverde will start the next game, against the Eagles on Sunday in Philadelphia, but will definitely be relieved by Chad Pennington at some point in the game.
Edwards, too, said that once Pennington gets into the game, it's his show from here on out.

"This is not going to be musical chairs, no, no, no," Edwards insisted. "There's not going to be any quarterback controversy."

Edwards, in fact, said that the plan is for Pennington to resume starting and playing a full game next week against the Giants, ironically the team that cost him these last eight weeks of missed playing time, pain, surgery and rehab when their linebacker Brandon Short sacked him and he suffered a fracture dislocation of his left wrist.

Edwards indicated that he'll play to the feel of the game when deciding when to bring Pennington in. Pennington said he expects to enter the game "sometime midway through the first half."

Edwards' quarterback strategy has several reasons for it, beginning with the unknown of whether Pennington is fit enough to play an entire game and including the unknown of how his left wrist will hold up to any hits it might endure.
