Should the NFL change the way OT is run?

Here's a question that Howard Simon and WNSA were talking about. I was wondering what you thought. Should both teams get the ball in overtime even if the team who gets the ball first, scores? After that and they are still tied...the game goes into sudden death. The first one who scores, wins! What do you think? It takes the game away from the coin toss.

Here's the facts...The following games went into overtime so far and these were the results.

    Week 1:
Bills/Jets = Jets got the ball first and scored in the kickoff return.
Saints/Bucs = Bucs got the ball first and did not score in the first drive.
Packers/Falcons = Packers got the ball first and did not score in the first drive.

    Week 2:
Bills/Vikings = Bills got the ball first and did not score in the first drive.

    Week 3:
Chiefs/Patriots = Patriots got the ball first and scored in the first drive.
Browns/Titans = Browns got the ball first and scored in the first drive.

3 out of 6 games in OT were decided by who won the coin toss and received the ball first. That's 50%! I think they need to change this. What do you say?

I agree, Mike. the NCAA way to do overtime is 100 times better than the pro way. It would force teams to go for TDs instead of settling for a 30 yard FG to win it. That way also, there would be no ties. Most importantly though the team that wins the coin toss doesn't have a 50% chance of winning it is based on performance.

      No Leave It Alone

50% of the games were decided by who had the ball first in OT and that convinces you there should be change? It is late in the game, the defence is tired and only a field goal is needed to win. I am surprised that the number is NOT higher than 50%.

The CFL has a rule where both teams get an opportunity to score in OT before there is sudden death. Even as a Canadian, I think it is kind of hokey. Yes, there have been circumstances where both teams in the CFL scored the same points in OT, but so what?

Leave it the way it is.

What I would like to see is an NFL team go for a two-point conversion to win the game on one of the last plays of the game rather than tying it with a one point convert.

Yeah, we don't need the CFL-ization of the NFL.

I've always had problems with this. I think that when a game is put into overtime that their should be a 7 minute clock set to determine the winner. No suddendeath. At the end of 7 minutes, if both teams still have the same score then the game should end in a tie.

7 Minutes is the Average Amount of Time...

... that an American male takes to have sex with a women from start to finish (Yes, ladies that includes foreplay if you are lucky to get from these non-stiffs).

The comparison for Canadian males is 77 minutes. More if it is a caribou or moose.

                :fabulous:

I like it the way it is. I think that's what makes overtime so exciting. It truly is "Sudden Death". College overtime sucks!

What part of "Sudden Death" do we not understand?

Otherwise, it would be "Slow, painful death" or "Death after a lingering illness" if we keep playing after a score.

I can't stand the high school approach the NCAA takes. It makes a mockery of scoring records. It used to mean something when a guy would get 6 TDs in a game. Red Grange sound familiar?

Now, we line 'em up within spitting distance of the goal line.

Leave it alone. If you can't stop a team from marching 60 yards on an opening drive, you don't deserve to win.

The stats would be outreageous if yoiu went to college rules.

I'd like to see one 7:30 overtime. When it runs out, the team that's ahead wins.
