    Porcher won't overstay welcome

    The subject of the moment in the Lions' locker room was mortality and immortality, and Robert Porcher was having no problem expressing his feelings on both subjects.

    On Friday, running back Barry Sanders -- Porcher's teammate for seven seasons -- was nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Immortality is beckoning Sanders. He was the most exciting runner in football history and a lock to be voted into the Hall on the first ballot in January.

    Mortality is another matter. Most athletes have a difficult time facing it. They think the ride on the magic carpet in pro sports will never end.
