Washington Redskins cornerback Fred Smoot is expected to miss three to four weeks with a bad sprain and deep bruise in his chest, team sources said last night.
The update followed Smoot's visit to a specialist yesterday. He will not play Sunday at Buffalo and there is a good chance he'll miss the Nov. 2 game at Dallas. Washington has an open date Oct. 26.
Second-year cornerback Rashad Bauman will replace Smoot in the starting lineup. Defensive coordinator George Edwards indicated Monday that safeties David Terrell and Todd Franz are ahead of rookie corner Ade Jimoh to take over as the No. 3 cornerback.
Smoot has a sprain of the joint connecting the collarbone to the sternum, as well as a deep bruise, sources said. He was in and out of Redskin Park several times before the medical update was confirmed. He didn't report new information but appeared to be in considerable pain
