One day after saying he didn't envision any changes with his starting lineup, Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer made a notable move with a backup.

Defensive tackle Leonardo Carson, the team's fourth-round pick in the 2000 draft and the top reserve among the interior linemen, was released yesterday after 18 career starts.

"The reason I was given was that they had come to the determination that his play had tailed off a little bit," said Steve Feldman, Carson's agent. "They said that (reserve) DeQuincy Scott had played what they considered to be better than Leo at this point, and that his lack of size – which had always been an issue – was even more an issue."

The Chargers filled Carson's spot by signing defensive tackle Joe Salave'a, an Oceanside product who recently was released for the second time this season by Baltimore. They also cut guard Kevin Breedlove, leaving an open roster spot
