Stewart out, Chandler in vs. Seahawks

The Bears' offense will take on a radically different look Sunday in Seattle, and no one is telling the entire story behind the changes.

Chris Chandler will start at quarterback in place of Kordell Stewart, who has a left thigh bruise, and running back Anthony Thomas is listed as doubtful with a sprained foot, leaving Adrian Peterson to make his first career start.

For competition reasons, what foot Thomas injured is unknown. Coach Dick Jauron called him a long shot, and Thomas could be sidelined two weeks. What is also being left out is whether Chandler's promotion would have taken place had Stewart's leg not swelled up, making him questionable on the injury report.

    Stewart injury quite convenient

The question that kept being asked Wednesday -- the one Dick Jauron wanted no part of -- was whether the Bears would have made a quarterback change this week had Kordell Stewart been healthy.

Stewart, they insist, does indeed have a leg injury. A convenient one, no doubt, but an injury nonetheless.

Talk about a blessing in disguise. Stewart's injured leg allows the Bears to make a quarterback change for their game Sunday at Seattle. They will start 37-year-old Chris Chandler because Stewart is hurt, without having to admit they likely would have benched him anyway because of performance issues.
