Jim Fassel's infrastructure in the locker room is not yet crumbling, even if the Giants' season is blowing up.
Fassel deserves these last 10 games to put together one of his season-saving/job-saving magic tricks, but if the Giants, a dismal 2-4, continue to embarrass themselves and don't make the playoffs, then it's time for management to put an end to the Fassel Era.

Not surprisingly, Giants GM Ernie Accorsi declined to comment yesterday on Fassel's job status. He trotted out his annual, "The coaching situation is not an issue in this organization." The last thing the Giants will do is hand out weekly Fassel updates.

"We've been in this predicament several times," Accorsi said. "Sometimes, we have pulled out of it. Sometimes, we haven't. I have confidence in Jim doing it again. He has the track record. He somehow finds the answer."

But they must be squirming inside mission control at Giants Stadium. The Giants should make no plans for Houston on Feb. 1

Despite the hysteria created by the latest meltdown, the Giants will not change coaches in the middle of the season. In the NFL, it's counterproductive.
