After two weeks of vehemently rejecting the notion Brian Griese could push Jay Fiedler as the starting quarterback, Dolphins coaches are now pondering scenarios in which Griese could play against the San Diego Chargers.

Coach Dave Wannstedt continued to voice public support for Fiedler on Monday afternoon, after the starter threw two interceptions and directed the offense into the end zone only once in a 19-13 overtime loss to New England the day before.

But because Fiedler suffered what a source called a sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee and has been struggling, the coaching staff is addressing contingencies for using Griese against San Diego.

The use of Griese would be prompted primarily by Fiedler's injury status rather than any perceived dissatisfaction with his performance in recent weeks, a Dolphins source stressed

Coach Dave Wannstedt said he will wait until Sunday to announce whether ailing quarterback Jay Fiedler or backup Brian Griese will start Monday night at San Diego.

"I'm not going to talk about it or give out any information until then," Wannstedt said after Wednesday's practice. "I'll make up my mind before that."

Wannstedt said Fiedler, who sprained a knee Sunday in the Dolphins' 19-13 overtime loss to New England, worked only in individual drills while Griese took most of the snaps with the first team.

Wannstedt said his decision on who is to start will be determined by how much Fiedler can practice.

"There's nobody on our team tougher than Jay," Wannstedt said. "He played the whole fourth quarter and half the third quarter with a bad knee. The doctors at this point are saying let's just see how it goes a day at a time. That's what we're planning on doing."

Fiedler said he didn't attempt team drills Wednesday to give himself an extra day of recovery time, as the Dolphins have yet to install their game plan.

Brian Griese again worked with the Miami Dolphins' starting offense Saturday, with Jay Fiedler unable to practice because of a sprained knee ligament.

Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt did not announce a starter for Monday night's game at San Diego but said he has "pretty much made up my mind." He said the starter will be named Monday.

Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Fiedler was a spectator at practice for the second consecutive day Saturday, making it all but certain Brian Griese will make his first start of the season Monday night at San Diego.

``We'll officially announce the starter on Monday like I said we would,'' coach Dave Wannstedt said after practice Saturday.
