Green Bay - Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has a hairline fracture of his right thumb just below the nail, but coach Mike Sherman said Favre was confident he could play with the injury.
The Packers don't play again until Nov. 2 at Minnesota because they have a bye this weekend and Favre will not take part in the two practices scheduled today and Thursday. Favre will have his thumb placed in a splint until next week when the team returns from four straight days off.
"He won't do anything this week and we'll further evaluate it on Monday," Sherman said.
Favre, who has started 197 consecutive games, hurt the thumb on the first series of the game Sunday in St. Louis when he followed through on a pass and hit guard Mike Wahle's shoulder pads.
He did not come out of the game and continued to function as normal in the Packers' 34-24 loss to the Rams.
"He played a heck of a game with it," Sherman said. "If we had to play this week, he said he could play with it. Hopefully, in two weeks it will be better. But he played pretty well with it the other day."
After the game, Favre, who completed 23 of 32 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, had ice on the thumb. He experienced some swelling later that caused the medical staff to take X-rays, which showed a hairline fracture of the bone just below the thumbnail.
