Contingency plans to replace cornerback Brian Kelly will now become permanent ones this season.
The Bucs' starting left cornerback was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, two days after re-aggravating a torn pectoral muscle injury in the 24-7 loss to San Francisco. Originally injured in the Oct. 6 loss to Indianapolis, Kelly tried to play in pain against the 49ers but left the game in the second quarter.

Surgery is the only option to fix the injury, which Kelly knew would end his season if it came to that.

``It's an unfortunate situation,'' said Kelly, who tied for the league lead last season with eight interceptions. ``Surgery was always a priority coming in after I first had the injury. However, I wanted to recover and see what I could do, if I could come back and play with it.

``It really wasn't about the pain, I just didn't have the movement and the strength I needed.''

As for his replacement, the Bucs have several options. After Kelly was injured during the first defensive series against the Colts, second-year cornerback Tim Wansley replaced him. Wansley was beaten often by Indianapolis wide receiver Marvin Harrison.
