    Name time: Chandler to start

The Bears will name Chris Chandler their starting quarterback today for their game Sunday against the Detroit Lions.

Kordell Stewart, rumored to be benched for performance reasons, has a deep left thigh bruise that will require more rest. Stewart played eight seasons in Pittsburgh without missing a game because of injury and rarely was held out of practice. But the hits he has taken -- in the pocket, scrambling and running the option -- added up against Oakland and New Orleans.

Chandler completed 19 of 34 passes for 149 yards Sunday in a 24-17 loss at Seattle, his first start since Week 16 last season at Carolina. He was intercepted twice, with one going off tight end Desmond Clark's hands.

"The old saying is you never look as good or as bad as you think you did,'' Chandler said. "It always looks about the same. You see when you make the plays, it's a little bit here and there, missing the guy by a foot as opposed to hitting him, things like that.''

Chandler admitted Monday that knowing he was the starter through the entire week made preparation -- and life -- easier, and an extra week of working with the first team should help, along with the potential return of running back Anthony Thomas and wide receiver Marty Booker. The Bears lost Clark and wide receiver Ahmad Merritt in the Seattle game, and right guard Chris Villarrial was out for a short span, making it a patchwork attack.
