His broken thumb makes for good drama, but there is hardly a soul around the Green Bay Packers' organization who doesn't think that Brett Favre will be under center against Minnesota Nov. 2.
Until he is re-examined next week and shows that he can throw adequately, Favre's status isn't certain, but his coaches aren't going to lose a lot of sleep during the bye week wondering if he will be ready to play when he returns from a short vacation to his home in Mississippi.
"It always weighs on you, but knowing Brett, it kind of takes the weight off because he's going to play," Packers offensive coordinator Tom Rossley said. "He could have all 10 fingers broken and he's going to play."
Perhaps that's an exaggeration, but it's not too far off the mark. Favre's thumb injury in 1999 was far worse because it affected the muscle that controls the thumb's movement. This injury also will affect his grip, but he said Tuesday that it is mostly a matter of him withstanding the pain.
The thumb is swollen and black and blue and will remain that way for awhile. By next week, the swelling should be down, Favre said, and then he will find out just how painful it is to throw the ball.
