ALAMEDA -- The cloudy nature of quarterback Rich Gannon's future world cleared Wednesday -- at least slightly.
"If we had to play this week, he would not play," Oakland Raiders coach Bill Callahan told the news media.
Furthermore, if he mends sufficiently during the bye week and is able to answer the call against Detroit on Nov.2, Gannon is still Callahan's No.1 guy.
So much for the arrival of the Marques Tuiasosopo Era.
"I told the team today Rich is our starter," Callahan said. "I think the team understands that and understands my stance on it."
What remains unclear is the exact nature of Gannon's injury.
"I'm not going to get into the depth of the injury," Callahan said. "You know my policy about that. I don't want to disclose the results (of the MRI taken on Gannon's damaged right shoulder). I really don't feel comfortable talking about a player's injury. What I can tell you is that it does affect the throwing motion."
As a result, Gannon was on the field Wednesday "taking mental reps." But whatever is ailing him prevents him from physically joining practice.
"You can talk to him and see if he would like to visit with you about that," Callahan said.
