Greg Blache wrapped himself in the Constitution and encouraged his players to exercise their freedom of speech when assessing the work of the officials, something the Bears have done openly after their last two losses.

"I'm not that powerful a person to take that freedom away,'' he said.

When it came time to discuss cornerback R.W. McQuarters, however, the Bears' defensive coordinator deftly maneuvered from the First Amendment to the Fifth Amendment, leaving coach Dick Jauron to announce the news: McQuarters has been benched, 21 months after signing a five-year, $22 million contract that included $6.5 million in bonus money, one of the final deals written by former contract negotiator Jim Miller.

The move came three days after McQuarters said he didn't expect to lose his job after three plays led to 17 Seattle points in the Seahawks' 24-17 victory. He was called for pass interference in the end zone, got beaten by Bobby Engram for his first touchdown in four seasons and muffed a punt.
