SAN DIEGO -- Tonight's game between the Miami Dolphins and the San Diego Chargers has been moved to Tempe, Ariz., because of wildfires in San Diego County that caused at least eight deaths and burned hundreds of homes.

San Diego Mayor Dick Murphy asked the NFL to move or cancel the game because of the state of emergency, declared for San Diego County by Gov. Gray Davis.

"The residents of greater San Diego are suffering from terrible fires, and public health and safety are the urgent priorities," read a statement issued by NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

"This decision will allow San Diego public safety agencies to maintain their full focus on protecting the lives and property of San Diego residents."

The Dolphins will make the short flight from San Diego to Tempe this morning on a team charter.
