A 26-10 victory over the San Diego Chargers at Sun Devil Stadium did more than cap one of the most unusual trips in Dolphins history.
It also has opened the door for a full-fledged quarterback controversy.
Brian Griese was superb in his first Dolphins start replacing the injured Jay Fiedler, who was sidelined with a knee injury suffered in the previous game against New England. Griese completed 13 of his first 14 passes for 145 yards and three touchdowns while staking the Dolphins (5-2) to a 24-3 halftime lead. Griese finished the game 20 of 29 for 192 yards with no interceptions.
"Will there now be a quarterback controversy? You'd have to be an idiot to think that's not going to happen," Dolphins tight end Randy McMichael said. "Of course that's going to happen. But we can't let that distract us."
As his team prepares for a key home showdown Sunday against Indianapolis (6-1), Dave Wannstedt could face one of the toughest decisions of his three-plus seasons as Dolphins coach. If Fiedler's sprained left knee is sufficiently healed, does Wannstedt still opt to start Griese because of how smoothly the Dolphins' offense operated in the first half against the overmatched Chargers (1-6)?
"What we're going to do at quarterback next week, I'm not going to go there right now," Wannstedt said. "We'll wait and see how Jay is and we'll watch the film. There will be no hypotheticals.
