A 26-10 victory over the San Diego Chargers at Sun Devil Stadium did more than cap one of the most unusual trips in Dolphins history.

It also has opened the door for a full-fledged quarterback controversy.

Brian Griese was superb in his first Dolphins start replacing the injured Jay Fiedler, who was sidelined with a knee injury suffered in the previous game against New England. Griese completed 13 of his first 14 passes for 145 yards and three touchdowns while staking the Dolphins (5-2) to a 24-3 halftime lead. Griese finished the game 20 of 29 for 192 yards with no interceptions.

"Will there now be a quarterback controversy? You'd have to be an idiot to think that's not going to happen," Dolphins tight end Randy McMichael said. "Of course that's going to happen. But we can't let that distract us."

As his team prepares for a key home showdown Sunday against Indianapolis (6-1), Dave Wannstedt could face one of the toughest decisions of his three-plus seasons as Dolphins coach. If Fiedler's sprained left knee is sufficiently healed, does Wannstedt still opt to start Griese because of how smoothly the Dolphins' offense operated in the first half against the overmatched Chargers (1-6)?

"What we're going to do at quarterback next week, I'm not going to go there right now," Wannstedt said. "We'll wait and see how Jay is and we'll watch the film. There will be no hypotheticals.

Not to be mean or disrespectful or incendiary in any way whatsoever, but: Jay Who?

And, bear in mind, I'm a guy who has been one of Who's biggest supporters.

The Dolphins offense needs to be left in Brian Griese's right hand from this point forward for as long as he performs anywhere close to the level he did Monday night, bringing these points, this punch and potential. This palpable spark.

That's presuming what we saw actually and truly happened, and was not the video version of a Dave Wannstedt dream or the fancy of Bob Griese's imagination.

Son of Bob completed 20 of 29 passes and had three touchdown throws in the Dolphins' 26-10 victory over the New York Yank . . . -- oops, sorry. Force of habit. Over the Arizona Chargers, is what I meant.

The game was moved from San Diego to Tempe's Sun Devil Stadium on account of enormous fires in Southern California, the mention of terrific heat bringing us neatly back to Griese.

He was making his first appearance as a Dolphin, only starting, of course, because regular starter Jay Who has a sprained knee. The debut would have been more impressive only if prior to making Monday's short team-charter hop to Tempe, Griese had single-handedly put out those fires.

If it were physically possible to have more completions than attempts, Griese might have this night. About four of his incompletions were drops. If he were any more dominant or in command, I'd be calling him Josh Beckett. Griese was able to spread the ball all over the field with such ease, he even completed two short passes to his golden retriever, Bella.

Brian Griese -- if the thumb on his passing hand doesn't prevent it -- likely earned another start with his performance in the Dolphins' 26-10 victory over San Diego.

Coach Dave Wannstedt said Tuesday that he would announce his choice of Griese or Jay Fiedler after obtaining more medical information. Fiedler is recovering from a sprained medial collateral ligament of the left knee suffered against New England. He didn't play vs. San Diego, and there are doubts about his readiness for Indianapolis on Sunday.

"I went through some three-quarter [speed] stuff [in the pregame] and felt good," Fiedler said. "I kind of jerked it a little bit when I went full speed. At that point, it was a good decision not to go."

Griese's thumb was swollen after the game. Wannstedt said there was some concern about it, but it wasn't thought to be serious. He indicated that Griese hit his thumb on a defender's helmet.

"I played as hard as I could, and those outside circumstances are not under my control," said Griese about whether he starts. "I will come in [Wednesday], try to get better and go from there."

Quarterback Brian Griese will start for the second consecutive week for the Miami Dolphins when they play Indianapolis on Sunday, Nov. 2.

"Right now he (Griese) gives our football team the best chance to win," Head Coach Dave Wannstedt said. "Jay did more than he did last week at this time, but with everything considered I told him and Brian that Brian will start this week and we'll go from there. Hopefully Jay will progres enough where he can be the second quarterback Sunday."

Dave Wannstedt told Brian Griese he would be the starting quarterback against the Indianapolis Colts when the two happened to cross paths in the bathroom after practice Wednesday.
