Buchanan faces benching in revamped secondary

Wade Phillips is overhauling the NFL's worst defense at midseason. Timing alone suggests this is not like fixing a leaky pipe. It's more like the Falcons defensive coordinator is gutting the plumbing before a flood drowns everyone.

"Like I said [last week], we're going to make some changes," Phillips said Monday. "The status quo wasn't getting us anywhere."

Phillips was leery to talk about specifics, but players returning to practice after last week's bye indicated that many decisions have been made, starting with the scheme. Injuries to several linebackers are expected to dictate that Phillips change from a 3-4 defense, with three linemen and four linebackers, to a 4-3.

And he's probably going to completely revamp the starting secondary as the Falcons (1-6) try to end a six-game losing streak Sunday against the Eagles (4-3).

Tod McBride and Juran Bolden, who will probably be activated from the physically unable to perform list, are likely to start at cornerback, Cory Hall and rookie Bryan Scott at the safeties.

Benching cornerbacks Ray Buchanan and Tyrone Williams and safeties Keion Carpenter and Gerald McBurrows is a matter of numbers.
