It would be a good idea for Jets fans to enjoy this week while it lasts. The game Sunday against the crosstown rival Giants figures to be its last one with true meaning for quite some time.

Is it possible that the Jets could use a victory over the Giants as a springboard for a turnaround as stirring as last season's? Anything is possible, although there doesn't seem to be the same conviction among the players as there was last year.

Even if the Jets (2-5) get their defense straightened out and gain momentum from Chad Pennington's return, this team is facing an avalanche of salary- cap and personnel decisions that will test the effectiveness and staying power of the Woody Johnson- Terry Bradway- Herman Edwards regime.

People familiar with the Jets' early road map for recovery believe that as many as 15 players currently on the roster will be gone after the season. That number could include as many as five current starters.

The salary-cap ramifications over the next two seasons will be immense.

"What a mess," said a person who has studied the Jets' contractual obligations. "This team is really in cap hell the next two years."
