A towel-draped Drew Brees stood silently off to the side -- alone in his thoughts -- as the postgame media mob encircling Doug Flutie also enveloped Brees' clubhouse cubicle.
The quarterbacks shared more than a dressing area Sunday. There was empathy from the 41-year-old Flutie, 17 years Brees' senior, who replaced the struggling starting quarterback in the fourth quarter of the San Diego Chargers' 20-7 loss to the Bears.
Once the TV lights dimmed and the tape recorders pulled away from Flutie, who had instantly energized his team's offense by directing an eight-play, 74-yard touchdown drive on his first possession, the veteran leaned in and talked quietly to Brees as the 24-year-old Purdue alum dressed.
