A quarterback controversy on a team that's 1-7 normally wouldn't generate much attention.

But this one involves Doug Flutie, who's been playing pro football since 1985 and was embroiled in a divisive dispute with Rob Johnson during his three seasons with the Buffalo Bills.

Will the lowly San Diego Chargers stick with struggling Drew Brees at quarterback or let the energetic 41-year-old Flutie take over? Stay tuned, because coach Marty Schottenheimer isn't in any rush to say who's going start Sunday's home game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Flutie takes most of snaps in practice
SAN DIEGO -- Doug Flutie took the majority of snaps for the second straight day, but San Diego Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer said he'll wait until Friday to announce his starting quarterback for this weekend's game against Minnesota.

Schottenheimer said Thursday he wants to keep the Vikings guessing whether they'll have to face the scrambling Flutie or Drew Brees, a pocket passer.

"I thought they both did a nice job today," Schottenheimer said....

What is it about Flutie that even at 41 he can get a level headed coach to start him? geesh!

SAN DIEGO – Now Doug Flutie gets to see what he can do for a whole game.

Still energetic at 41, and in his 19th season in pro football, Flutie will start at quarterback for the punchless San Diego Chargers at home Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, replacing the ineffective Drew Brees.

Flutie replaced Brees in the fourth quarter at Chicago on Sunday and led the Chargers (1-7) on their only scoring drive in an otherwise dismal 20-7 loss....
