Ronnie Lott, the spiritual heart of the 49ers during most of their title-winning years, will have his No. 42 jersey retired during halftime of the team's Nov. 17 Monday night game against the Steelers.
The organization made the announcement Wednesday, and Lott's trademark intensity and emotion leaked out during the press conference. Lott stirred uncomfortably and fought back tears when asked what his children think when they look at the amputated tip of his left pinkie.
"I don't know," Lott said. "There are certain things that happen to you in your life. Certain sacrifices you make. Sometimes people don't understand why you would do that."
