The Patriots have seen several of their young receivers emerge into viable threats during the past month, but their veteran depth appears to have taken a blow this week.

David Patten was released yesterday from Massachusetts General Hospital after undergoing surgery on his injured right knee on Wednesday, according to sources.

The exact nature of Patten's injury and the details of the surgery are not known, but the fact Patten spent the night in the hospital is not an encouraging sign. Arthroscopic procedures, from which players typically are able to recover in a short period of time, usually do not require overnight stays.

If the Pats place Patten on injured reserve, he will be lost for the season. Otherwise, they can continue to carry him on the roster in hopes he will return to full health for the stretch run in December
