The Dolphins' defense, which has been the team's cornerstone all year, could be in trouble Sunday, as two of its best players might not be in the lineup because of injuries.

Linebacker Zach Thomas, who leads the team in tackles, and cornerback Patrick Surtain, whose six interceptions are second in the NFL, missed practice for the second day in a row Thursday and are listed as questionable for the game against the Tennessee Titans.

DAVIE -- Linebacker Zach Thomas, dealing with a strained right groin, did not practice Thursday and has lost confidence in his ability to play at Tennessee on Sunday.

"I'm trying to be positive, but no, I'm not confident," Thomas said. "I want to play but I don't want to miss next week and the week after. I don't think I've ever missed a Thursday practice and played in a game."

Thomas, who leads the Dolphins with 104 tackles, including 22 Sunday against Indianapolis, has started all eight games this season and has missed only one game because of injury in the past two seasons....

MIAMI (AP) -- Miami Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas will miss Sunday's game at Tennessee because of an injured groin.

Thomas, who leads the Dolphins with 104 tackles this season, was downgraded to ``out'' on the team's official injury report Saturday. Thomas was unable to practice with the team on Friday and will likely be replaced in the starting lineup by Tommy Hendricks.

Also Saturday, the Dolphins released return specialist Charlie Rogers and activated cornerback Alphonso Roundtree from the practice squad.

Miami (5-4) came in allowing just 13.8 points per game, best in the NFL, and the Dolphins had been unbeaten on the road this season. None of that mattered against the Titans, who snapped a five-game skid against Miami.

Tennessee improved to 7-2 by setting a franchise record of scoring 30 or more points for the sixth straight game. The defense sacked Brian Griese four times and forced him into two fumbles and three interceptions that the Titans turned into 17 points.

"What's better for an offense than to see the defense score?" McNair asked.
