While acknowledging he won't be ready to play Monday night against Pittsburgh, Jeff Garcia expressed exasperation Wednesday with what he called "the fickleness of things'' as some people called for a change at quarterback for the 49ers.

Tim Rattay will get the start for the second straight game, which Garcia said was necessary because he's sidelined by a sprained ankle that is the most recent in a spate of injuries that includes a bulging disk in his back, a sore groin and a banged-up wrist.

Ah, I love the smell of a quarterback controversy in the morning. The 49ers and Raiders each have one brewing and stewing, and that's the best thing that could happen for Bay Area football fans, and the media that serve them.

Actually, the best thing would be for both teams to be undefeated and steaming toward a Super Bowl showdown, but that train got derailed months ago when some kid put a penny on the track.

Fortunately, both local teams have filled the thrilling-march-to-the- playoffs void with quarterback turmoil. ...
