    Welbourn out 2 to 3 weeks after surgery

    In just 3 days, Eagles starting left guard John Welbourn went from a guy who probably would continue to play with knee inflammation, to "doubtful" for Sunday's game against the Giants, to undergoing surgery to repair the meniscus in his right knee at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo.

    The Eagles, who didn't choose to explain how the Welbourn prognosis changed so dramatically, said he would miss 2 to 3 weeks. In Welbourn's place, second-year player Artis Hicks will get his first NFL start Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

    Center Hank Fraley now will line up between two newcomers - right guard Bobbie Williams, who replaced Jermane Mayberry when Mayberry suffered a season-ending elbow injury Oct. 19, and Hicks. There will be details to work out among the new guards, the center and tackles Tra Thomas and Jon Runyan
