When old friends Herman Edwards and Tony Dungy met at midfield for the postgame handshake last night at the RCA Dome, they looked at each other and shrugged. For two defensive-minded coaches, it was one of those dreaded games, dominated by the playmakers on offense. Good for TV ratings, bad for the coaches' stomachs.
"We set defensive football history back 1,000 years," Edwards told the Colts coach before they embraced.

Indeed, the Jets looked downright Jurassic, as they surrendered 538 total yards in a 38-31 loss that all but destroyed their faint playoff hopes. It was one of the worst defensive performances in the Edwards era. The last time they allowed that many yards was the 1998 opener, when the 49ers stamped 557 yards on them - and that was an overtime game.
