The Broncos' no-name, second- ranked defense took another hit.

Rookie linebacker Terry Pierce, a second-round draft pick out of Kansas State, was placed on injured reserve Monday. Pierce tore a pectoral muscle Sunday in Denver's 37-8 victory over San Diego.

Pierce, who was backing up Al Wilson at middle linebacker and playing special teams, is the third Broncos linebacker to go on season-ending injured reserve this year. The team already had lost starter Ian Gold (knee) and John Mobley (neck) for the season.

"Unfortunately, we lost another linebacker. I don't think I've ever seen a position put three guys on injured reserve before," coach Mike Shanahan said. "Keith Burns will play both (middle) and (strongside) linebacker, and Johnny Rutledge, the linebacker we signed last week, will be indoctrinated a little quicker than we thought."
