View Full Version : What do we need more? A stud DE or a stud receiver?

A lot of folks are calling for a stud DE but if you look, our defense is more than doing it's job.

We need another Peerless Price type of player. Any of them out there in the upcoming draft?

Valerie
11-19-2003, 01:04 PM
I would say the Bills need a good receiver. But, what good will a good receiver do if Drew can't get them the damn ball?

I think the defense is fine and they need to work on the offense.

Valerie

BTW, I was never in favor of getting rid of Peerless. I thought he was good and I thought that he was finally starting to shine. I was disappointed when he was let go.

Agreed. Leave the D alone, upgrade the O! Man i miss peerless :(

What DE do you suggest, Will Smith is the only one worthy of a top 20 pick.

FA? Kearse WILL be tagged. Hicks is sporadic. Anybody else. Dont just say DE. Give some names.

The question was asked what we needed more. DE or wr. I said DE. Names? :idunno: Flutie?

A rookie WR will not help us at ALL next year. All rookie WR's struggle in the NFL unless their name is Randy Moss.

A rookie DE on the other hand could make an immediate impact.

By the way.. Josh Reeds numbers are far superior to Eric Moulds first couple years. Look it up. Josh will be fine as a #2.

zone
11-19-2003, 01:37 PM
Eric struggled terribly when he first started, it was not until a couple years back when he spent the off season working with jerry rice that he turned into a stand out. Josh played well on sun.... As for Aiken I have not liked what I have seen why was CC not getting any time in there, or A. Brown for that matter... you don't think A.Brown with his blazing speed can streach a field?

As for the question we need a DE bad! I think this question should include new o-line as one of the choices that would win for sure.

An O-line stud would be the most helpful. Getting one of those would help us more in the passing game than getting another top-notch WR. And even though our D is top-tier, we don't generate enough turnovers. That is a direct consequence of no pass rush. If the line could pressure the QB of good teams with a 4 man rush, imagine our secondary and LBs roaming around the field only having to cover for a few seconds instead of the 5-6s with blitz we have now.

I'll give you 2 names, and they're both in Denver. Bert Berry and Reggie Hayward. Berry will be an UFA and has 8 sacks to date this year. Hayward will be a RFA and has 6 sacks to date this year. If we were able to get either of these guys, we'd be in much better shape in terms of rushing the passer.

We need a DE more.

Our WR are not burners Except for moulds but the get the job done our offense is supposed to be a more run based. so a fast receiver is not all that important I personally think Reed is coming along fine now that he is past his slump. Personally I would like to see more of coleman I think he is a little faster than reed and shaw. Like I said I think our WR are fine, but we could use someone to put oppsite Schobel.

Our WRs would be fine if the offensive philosophy / play calling didn't suck.

Both would be great.. The defense is playing great as is.. Having more of a pass rush would be great, but the defense isnt scoring points.. Can always get a very good WR in the 2nd-3rd round.. How much difference can another WR make if Bledsoe is only eyeing Moulds.. Then again how much more can another DE make?? Schobel, Denney, and Kelsay will still be here.. Buffalo shouldnt look in the draft for another DE.. They need a DE with some experience who is healthy.. Kearse will be tagged or get alot of money from another team that wont be Buffalo..

So get a DE through FA and get a WR in the 1st day of the draft..

If the best of the draft pool of DEs is W Smith, then I say go for the improvement in the offense. Smith is a light guy and may not stand up against the run.....I guess watching the UM - Ohio State game this weekend will shed some light on this.

I don't lend much worth to claims that a DE can't stand up to the run. You could argue that Bruce wasn't exactly a run stopper. He was a pass rushing machine but not much else. Right now our DE's are pretty much run orientated and are totally lame against the run. I'd be glad to trade some of that run stopping for pass rushing ability., We need a DE we can rotate in on obvious passing downs.

BuffaloRanger
11-20-2003, 12:37 AM
A team only needs one stud WR - which the Bills have.

A team also needs a stud pass rushing TE - which the Bills don't have.

The Bills also need to upgrade their interior O-line.

since we're looking at the 7th to 12th pick in the draft when its all done, these are possibilities at DE, WR and OT at that point:

jr. DE David Pollack, GEORGIA

- his sophomore numbers speak for themselves
102 tackles, 23.5 for a loss, 14 sacks, 2 int's , 7 pass breakups.... remember, he was a sophomore.

sr. DE Will Smith, OHIO ST.

remember, this guy is double and even triple teamed during every play, so his numbers wont look outstanding but its amazing how he avoids blockers and still gets to the QB.

-junior stats 59 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks.

--------------
both Roy and Reggie will be gone by the 7th pick .. its too early to tell if Larry is gonna come out of school, he's a soph. and my guess is he wont... remember, this is between the 7th and the 12th pick.

jr WR Michael Clayton ( 6-4 , 210 ) , LSU

Bigtime difference maker with exceptional skills and can make the acrobatic catch. with size and speed, he's also a deep threat everytime he runs.

sr. Rashaun Woods ( 6-1 , 190 ) OKLA ST.

runs the best WR routes ive seen, is unstopable.. i watched a game of his this year where he set the single game record for rec. TD's when he caught 7 TD's in one game... this guy's a football player.

---------------

sr OT Robert Gallery, IOWA ( 6-7 , 320 )

this guy is a rare talent, we'd be lucky if he slips to the 7th spot.

OT Shawn Andrews ( 6-5 , 335 )

VERY, VERY athletic for his size .. can play both sides.

DE No question

Buffalo can use a #2 receiver with some speed, something they can find later in the draft. Check out Drew Carter, Winfield. Your list from GBNDR didn't have his name on it. He's from Ohio State, 6'4" and runs the 40 in 4.26.

Will Smith would be my targeted player in round one. Antwan Odom is a possibility in round 2 if he comes out. Hes a little raw but has great measurables and a motor. There are a few guys later on in the draft Constantin Ritzmanof Tennessee and Travis LaBoy of Hawaii, but round one is the place to pick up your DE stud.

smiths numbers reflect that he has been double teamed, but.. i want a guy that is double teamed and still making plays.. he really doesnt have impressive numbers.. let me tell you.. i am pretty sure that the double teams from PRO o lineman will be signifcantly more difficult in the nfl than they were in college..

and pollack has not shown consistency... imho.. so what he had a great sophmore season.. so did corey moore..

i am just NOT impressed with the options at DE in the draft this year... at all. kind of like last year. plus, we have two young guys that need some time... denny is likely a career back up.. he may develope more into a solid, hansen type player.. and kelsay.. well, he will definately need reps to get better.... so if we bring someone else in at DE, he better be damn good.. i dont want another young guy we need to wait on.

at WR, i think that we have significant talent there.. shaw is a good wr... perfect number 3.

I have far from given up on reed... moulds sucked for 3 years before becoming the man he is now, and that was only once flutie took over and started launching the ball to him.

aiken will get better as well, and has the size/speed to be a good player.

again... if we bring someone in, it needs to be someone established that is ready to go... i dont want a kid to wait on.. we have those at DE and WR.

I would use my draft to stock up on TE, OG, C, FS, and DT... and why does everyone keep pointing out that we need a TACKLE on the oline??? last i checked, we have TOO many tackles w/ jennings, williams, price, sullivan, and teague... i dont get it.

Regarding the offensive line, I agree that it is the interior of the line that needs to be bolstered, not tackle. Generally speaking not many guards and very few centers are drafted in round one. This year will be no exception. There might be one or two guards worthy of late round one consideration and no centers. rounds 2-4 are the spots to pick up your quality interior offensive linemen. I would have Buffalo draft a guard in that range (round 3 or 4)

To get a stud prospect like Stephen Peterman or Adrien Clarke, you had better be prepared to use a second round pick AT THE LEAST. Imagine if we'd had looked at someone like Toniu Fonoti of SD(2nd round in '02 draft) or Steve Hutchinson of Seattle(17th overall pick in '01 draft) in the 2nd round. You can get guards later, but you get your DIFFERENCE MAKERS early.
