Apparently confident that the season is still salvageable despite a miserable 0-4 start, the Cincinnati Bengals will turn to quarterback Jon Kitna to try to resurrect the campaign, ESPN.com has confirmed.
The team's starter for 15 games in 2001, Kitna becomes the Bengals' third different No. 1 quarterback in three weeks. Gus Frerotte opened the season atop the depth chart, starting the first three outings, and he was replaced by former first-round draft choice Akili Smith last week.
Sources told ESPN.com that, had Bengals coaches been prepared to simply write off the season, Smith likely would have remained the starter as the club would have used the balance of the schedule to evaluate his future. But the coaches feel the Bengals have enough talent to compete, even though the club has been outscored 119-23 through four games, and statistically ranks No. 30 in the NFL in total offense.
