After a long wait, the Oilers get ready to host the very first outdoor game in the history of the NHL. The town is all abuzz with this. 60,000+ expected to be in attendance. It's going to be great.

Wayne Gretzky will play in his one and only Old Timers game at 3. Mark Messier is lacing them up for the Oilumni, the only Oiler from the glory days still playing.

Some great pics of the stadium:

Damn it all, I have to just give you the links. The photos don't show up :x:

the photo from yesterday with the snow on the ground:

I wonder if I'll see both the Legends' Game AND the game between Edmonton and Montreal? I have Centre Ice, so I assume I will. I'll have to check DISH's schedule.

The weather is supposed to about -12C on game day, which is a little brisk, but not too bad, cause we don't have any humidity. It will feel like -5C in Ont.

Funny thing is the NHLPA (Pansies that they are) won't let their players play if it is below -10C. However the Oldtimers will be playing regardless. Can you see the cry baby millionaires saying they won't go on the ice, after all the geezers just played.

If they don't play the official game outside, the contingency plan is to move indoors on Sunday. i'd like to know how they are going to fit 60,000+ into the 18,000 seat Skyreach.

That was a misleading stat SAB, there was a draw for tickets, it was the only fair way they could sell them. They sold packs of 4 to people who entered the draw. Their was 700,000 + entries for this draw, with some coming as far away as Australia, Finland, France, and even the far reaches of Canada.

Thats why the tickets are going for as much as 500 each.

11-21-2003, 01:04 PM
Hey, Australia is probably closer geographically than the "far reaches of Canada" are to Edmonton ;)

I wouldn't risk injury if my $2-3 M paycheque depended on it, either. I can just see the hamstrings & groin pulls happening, not to mention that the equipment (helmets, etc.) was never designed to be used in below freezing temps on a reguular basis. If I'm Tommy Salo, no way am I gonna be confident to step in front of a Al MacInnis slapshot for fear that my mask will shatter into a million little pieces. Mind you, the geezers take it down a few notches because of the state of their knees, etc. .

Call me a pansy, but I'm not stupid. I think it's a great idea for a one-off, but I can't see it catching on...

I thought I heard that the Maple Leafs are looking to do the same thing in SkyDome sometime this year.

I don't thiink ANYONE will have a decent view of the game itself.

They should have put the rink on one side of the field and put in temporary bleachers on the other. You might only get 35,000 to watch, but this will look silly. I love the idea of a "pond hockey" game though. Will people be allowed on the field to stand next to the glass?

Ð
11-21-2003, 01:28 PM
They had a bit on TSN about it last night and they talked about the Michigan State/Michigan game they did a few years back (Ryan Miller played in net).

They showed some clips of it...with the football lights it made for huge shadows on the ice and the goalies especially had a hard time picking up the puck.

The ice surface looked lost out there & remember that was at a (considerably smaller) US football stadium. I can just imagine what it's going to look like at commonwealth.

northernbillfan
11-21-2003, 02:05 PM
We have a huge warning track and nobody will be able to have a good view of the game. That's the biggest misconception, that people will actually be able to see the game.

Oh and Ð you are a pansy.

Salo isn't starting as he is still on the IR and McInnis doesn't play for Montreal...;)

NHL Center Ice is showing both games. Both games will be on ESPN Classics NEXT Saturday. I'm not sure about CBC, but I'm sure they have to show it.

Bad news for those of us anticipating the Outdoor Game later:

Chilly Day in Edmonton (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?ID=61514&hubName=nhl)

The MegaStars game will apparently carry on without a hitch, but the game between the Oil and Canadiens may be cancelled.

It was a great afternoon/evening yesterday, with both the Megastars Game and Heritage Classic. I have a new found respect for all the guys involved in yesterday's games. It was around 35 or so here in Central CA yesterday, but I couldn't feel cold, because those guys out there yesterday were in real cold.
